The Aspen Animal Shelter

The Aspen Animal Shelter is a privatized, no-kill shelter which is primarily supported by income created via The Aspen Boarding Kennel. The shelter provides a sanctuary for the homeless dogs and cats of Aspen and Pitkin County, and we do house the occasional bird or rabbit as well. Each homeless pet is neutered and vaccinated prior to adoption.

Volunteers are welcomed, and encouraged to walk the dogs, brush the cats, or even wash the dirty bowls.

Please call the shelter at 544-0206 to check on new arrivals--dogs, cats and occasionally birds, rabbits, ferrets, etc.!

The Facts
The shelter has 6,317 square feet of animal shelter and boarding kennels on the first floor; a 1,312-square-foot mezzanine area on the second floor along with 1,632 square feet of employee housing in two units; a simple design that is well-ventilated, energy-efficient and created with low-maintenance, cost-effective materials; a wall with 100 plaques honoring loved ones erected near the building entrance; a walkway laid with 500 name-inscribed bricks; and more than 350 decorative ceramic tiles with faces and names of pets with ties to Aspen.

The shelter is a no-kill facility that provides sanctuary for domestic animals found within Pitkin County.

Every dog and cat in the shelter is neutered and vaccinated, and cared for until a responsible home is found.

The shelter’s volunteer dog walking program is listed as one of the American Humane Association’s top innovative animal shelter programs in America.

Naming opportunities are available at the shelter, including tiles, plaques and kennels to honor your pet and/or loved ones.
